IV Authority Requirements

State Board of Nursing Chapter IX Rules, Rules and Regulations for the Licensed Practical Nurse in Relation to IV Authority, require that LPNs complete approved IV therapy training and be granted IV Authority in Colorado in order to perform specific procedures related to his/her role in intravenous therapy and venous blood sampling.

To be granted IV Authority in Colorado, the LPN must:

  • Hold an active, unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse license in Colorado or an active, unencumbered multi-state Licensed Practical Nurse license issued by a compact state other than Colorado;
  • Provide verification of completion of the required education and training.

To apply for LPN IV Authority:

  • Obtain an active, unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse license in Colorado or a multi-state Licensed Practical Nurse license in another compact state. Click here for more information regarding the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Complete the LPN IV Authority Application.

If your IV Therapy education and training was completed in Colorado:

  • Provide the LPN IV Authority Competency Checklist (included in the application packet) to your instructor for completion and return to you in a sealed envelope.
  • Attach the sealed envelope to the completed application and mail both to the State Board of Nursing with the correct fee to the address indicated on the application.

If your IV Therapy education and training was completed in another state:

  • Request transcripts and course descriptions in a sealed envelope from your training program verifying completion of an IV therapy training program that meets the criteria set forth in the State Board of Nursing Chapter IX Rules;
  • Provide the LPN IV Authority Competency Checklist (included in the application packet) to your instructor or a previous RN supervisor with knowledge of your skills for completion and return to you in a sealed envelope;
  • Attach the Competency Checklist and the transcripts/course descriptions to the completed application and mail the packet to the State Board of Nursing with the correct fee to the address indicated on the application.
