Effective November 1, 2013, hard copy, mail-in apprentice registration applications are no longer available. Apprentices are now directed to register using our online system. Contractors can also add/remove apprentices to/from their registration using Online Services.
NOTE: Our new system requires that all contractors have a correct FEIN (Tax ID number) in our database. If an attempt to register results in a “No match found” error message, please DO NOT register a new account, contact us at DORA_DPO_OnlineLicenses@state.co.us or 303-894-2421 so that we may ensure information accuracy in our system.
Any individual interested in becoming a plumbing apprentice should ask their employer (a registered plumbing contractor) about their apprentice training program and registration.
Registration with the state board is required in the plumbing laws. Once an apprentice begins working for a plumbing contractor, the employer must complete an application to register the apprentice with the board. After the initial registration, a card with a registration number is given to the apprentice. This number will remain the same through any employment changes. The apprentice is responsible to have the card with them while working at the trade. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.
It is the policy of the State Plumbing Board that plumbing contractors notify the Board within thirty days after an apprentice terminates their employment with the company. This is done by submitting a termination application located on the Plumbing Contractor webpage. NOTE: The application to register an apprentice and terminate employment is the same application; however, there is no fee incurred to notify the board that an apprentice has been terminated from the company.
The State of Colorado Plumbing law states that any individual employed in the plumbing trade is considered an apprentice and must be registered until such time as the individual has obtained a Colorado plumber's license.
Colorado law requires that the plumbing contractor notify this office and register all apprentices within thirty days of their date of hire as an apprentice. Please refer to §12-58-105(2) of the Colorado Revised Statutes.
Colorado law requires that the plumbing apprentice be directly supervised by a licensed Colorado plumber. Please refer to §12-58-117 of the Colorado Revised Statutes.
