Consumer Protection is our Mission.

The State Electrical Board licenses, registers, and regulates electricians, apprentices, and electrical contractors. The board does not regulate communication systems, elevators or passenger conveyors, bridge or highway projects, or data processing systems. They conduct regular inspections of the installations that they regulate, and review special requests for exceptions to the code. The Board’s mission is to protect the health of the public by enforcing the state electrical statutes. The board is made up of nine professional and public members that are appointed by the governor.

How to choose a Professional Development Activity or Continuing Education Course:

The Colorado Electrical Board does not pre-approve courses or programs for the Continuing Competency program. Vendors that advertise their courses as “DORA” or “Board Approved” are false. It is incumbent upon the licensee to ensure that a learning activity or course meet the criteria established by the Board.

The Board deems the following types of activities to be acceptable. Online participation in training programs or courses may be acceptable if in compliance with the below criteria and meeting the definition of a PDU which consists of 50 minutes of instruction, presentation or activity in a structured education effort.

  • Not-for credit academic course
  • For-credit academic course
  • Industry training program

When shopping for PDU credit, licensees should ensure the activity meets the following criteria:

  1. Include technical and practical applications which impact Core Competency areas identified by the Board;
  2. Improve, expand or enhance the quality of the licensee’s existing technical knowledge; or develop new and relevant professional skills and knowledge;
  3. Have clear purposes and objectives;
  4. Be well-organized and provide evidence of pre-planning;
  5. Be current and presented by qualified and technically competent instructors; and,
  6. Provide certificates of completion or other documentation for the licensee and maintain records of licensee attendance.


New Examination Vendor

On Friday, January 25, 2013, the Board transitioned to a new testing agency, PSI. This office has transferred currently approved exam candidate files to PSI.

We do not foresee any transition difficulties or examination delays, however, if you are unable to schedule an examination with PSI, contact the Office of Licensing at 303-894-7800.


We Changed Our Name!

The Division is now called the Division of Professions and Occupations, effective August 8, 2012. To help our consumers and licensees more readily locate and utilize our services, the legislature passed House Bill 12-1055 during the 2012 legislative session. Please note, the Division of Professions and Occupations will still be housed within the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Services the Division currently offers will remain the same.
 

 
Fee Adjustments for FY12

On October 1, 2011, the State Electrical Board adjusted permit fees. As an agency that is required to meet its expenses with money obtained from consumers and electricians, a change in fees is necessary because of recent and projected shortfalls in income. Electrical Permits Online

What services are available via the online permits system?
Contractors and homeowners may use the online system to:

  • Purchase new electrical permits using a credit or debit card
  • Purchase Trim permits
  • Request inspections
  • Pay re-inspection fees
  • Review permits and inspection reports (for the preceding 24 months)
  • Check permits to verify that the inspection is scheduled.
  • Pay additional charges (add fees) such as fees for increased job costs


What services are not available online?

  • Permit transfers
  • Permit Extensions
  • Informational changes to your permit (name, property address, spelling corrections, etc.)

2012 Legislation

Legislation passed during the Legislative Session impacts the Division of Professions and Occupations. The Division is developing an implementation process at this time. Please check back in the near future to learn about any changes to rules, requirements and important deadlines.
