Provisional Licensure for Mental Health Professionals
Employed in Residential Child Care Facilities 

Definitions

• Renew:  You currently hold a Colorado license and are in a renewal period.
• Reinstate:  Your Colorado license has expired and you wish to reinstate the license. 

Licensing Requirements

• The Colorado legislature passed Senate Bill 11-187, which reversed the July 1, 2011 repeal of provisional licensure. The provisional license is available to marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, psychologists and social workers who have education appropriate to their field and who work under supervision in a residential child care facility. Detailed information about licensure can be found in the applications for provisional licensure. Forms

License Expiration Grace Period for New Applicants. All new applicants who are issued a license within 120 days of the upcoming renewal expiration date will be issued a license with the subsequent expiration date. For example, licenses issued between May 1, 2013 and August 31, 2013 will reflect a license expiration date of August 31, 2015. Licenses issued prior to May 1, 2013 will reflect an expiration date of August 31, 2013 and must renew in the upcoming renewal period.

License Renewal Information. All Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor licenses on August 31 of odd-numbered years and must be renewed to continue practicing. Provisional licenses are subject to termination upon a change in the licensee’s employment or supervision. It is the licensee’s responsibility to notify the Board of any change in supervision or employment within thirty (30) days.
